The Camino de Santiago originated from the tradition that the Apostle St. James preached in Spain and was buried there. In the Middle Ages his tomb in Santiago de Compostela became a major site of Christian pilgrimage. Pilgrims traveled the routes to Santiago to obtain indulgences, which gave them a remission of their sins.
