The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya was formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India. The Prince of Wales (later King George V), along with his consort, Mary of Teck, arrived in India for a tour of the country in 1905. The museum was founded to commemorate the visit of the prince, who also laid the foundation stone of the museum.
