Female officers began serving on U.S. Navy submarines in 2011, and female enlisted personnel joined them in 2016. In September 2024 the USS New Jersey, a Virginia-class fast attack submarine, was commissioned. The New Jersey was the U.S. Navy’s first “gender neutral” submarine, designed from the hull up for a fully gender integrated crew. At the time the New Jersey put to sea, more than 700 women were serving as officers or enlisted personnel in the U.S. submarine force.
