A golden shovel is a poetic form in which a line from a preexisting poem is used to create a new one. Essentially, each word from the borrowed line becomes the end word of each line in the new poem. The form was invented by American poet Terrance Hayes in 2010 to pay homage to fellow poet Gwendolyn Brooks.
