Hungarian-born biochemist Katalin Karikó is best known for her pioneering research into RNA therapeutics, particularly the development of messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines. Karikó’s research showed how modified mRNA nucleosides could be used to direct the immune system against particular pathogens, a discovery that paved the way for the first mRNA-based vaccines, introduced in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
