The menorah disappeared after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 ce after the Siege of Jerusalem. It was displayed during the Roman triumphal march, and a depiction of it is found on the Arch of Titus in Rome. It then became a symbol of Jewish identity depicted in imagery in synagogues. It was adopted as a symbol by the Zionist movement in the 19th century and the seven-branched candelabra depicted on the Arch of Titus became the official emblem of the state of Israel in the 20th century.
