After her death in 1815, parts of Sarah Baartman’s body were preserved and displayed in a museum in Paris. In 1994, newly elected South African president Nelson Mandela asked France to return Baartman’s remains to South Africa. In 2002, her remains were returned and buried near her birthplace in Eastern Cape province.
