In 1898 Mata Hari (then known as Margaretha Geertruida MacLeod) and her husband, Capt. Rudolph MacLeod, had a daughter: Louise Jeanne (“Non”) MacLeod. After the couple separated—Rudolph was allegedly abusive—Margaretha initially had custody of Non. However, Rudolph refused to provide financial assistance, forcing her to leave the child in his care. Destitute and hoping to earn enough money to reunite with her daughter, Margaretha moved to Paris in 1905, eventually becoming a dancer and taking the name Mata Hari. It is not believed that she saw her daughter again before being executed in 1917. According to reports, Non MacLeod died at age 21.
