American Airlines flight 11 was hijacked on the morning of September 11, 2001, as part of a coordinated terrorist attack on the United States by al-Qaeda. Some 15 minutes after it took off from Boston Logan International Airport, five hijackers took control of the plane. About 30 minutes later the aircraft was flown into the north tower of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City. Shortly thereafter, a second hijacked plane, United Airlines flight 175, was flown into the south tower of the WTC. The crashes and subsequent collapse of both towers resulted in the deaths of 2,753 people, per official records. (There were 92 people, including the 5 hijackers, on flight 11.)
