Decades after Margaret Mitchell’s death in 1949, her estate authorized a sequel to her 1936 novel Gone with the Wind. Scarlett: The Sequel to Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind by Alexandra Ripley was published in 1991 and was mostly panned by critics, but it became an international best-seller. In 2001 Alice Randall published the parody novel The Wind Done Gone, which is told from the perspective of a formerly enslaved Black woman. Mitchell’s estate attempted to block its publication, claiming copyright infringement. Other sequels include Rhett Butler’s People (2007) and Ruth’s Journey (2014) by historical novelist Donald McCaig. These latter two novels were authorized by Mitchell’s estate.
