China asserts historical rights over many parts of the South China Sea, including Scarborough Shoal. Chinese claims to the atoll are based in part on a 1279 ce survey by the Chinese astronomer Guo Shoujing during the Yuan dynasty. The survey marked the atoll as a point in the South China Sea. More recently, China has asserted that Scarborough Shoal has always been part of its territory.
