Jimmy Cliff, born in 1944 in Jamaica, was raised a Pentecostal Christian. Later he became involved with the Rastafari movement, which began in Jamaica in the 1930s and combines Protestant Christianity, mysticism, and a pan-African political consciousness. In the 1970s Cliff converted to Islam after traveling to Africa, although he also took interest in Buddhism and Judaism.
