While exact numbers are unknown, it is estimated that more than 170,000 people died when Hiroshima and Nagasaki were struck with atomic bombs. In Hiroshima, which had a population of 343,000 inhabitants, some 70,000 people were killed instantly; by the end of the year the death toll had surpassed 100,000. An estimated 40,000 people died instantly in Nagasaki, and at least 30,000 more succumbed to their injuries and radiation poisoning by the end of the year.
