In parts of northern Europe, children receive special cookies, candies, and gifts on St. Nicholas Day (December 6). On the eve of St. Nicholas’s feast day, they leave letters for the saint and treats for his donkey or horse, and in the morning they find presents under their pillows or in shoes, stockings, or plates they have set out for him. Conversely, naughty children receive a lump of coal in their stockings.
