Onam festivities last for 10 days, with the biggest celebration on the last day, called Thiruvonam. Some Hindus add an 11th day as well. Women create mats out of flowers (called pookalams) to welcome King Mahabali, and celebrants decorate streets and homes. Cultural performances and sports during the holiday include the Vallamkali boat races, Onathallu choreographed sparring, and dances such as Puli Kali and Kaikottikali. Figurines (murtis) of Vishnu, Mahabali, and other deities are made, displayed, and worshipped. People also clean their homes, shop for and exchange gifts, and visit relatives.
