In 2025 Pres. Donald Trump announced that he had ordered work on a new census that would exclude undocumented immigrants. This is not the first time that he has moved to limit the number of people counted in the census. In 2020, during his first term, Trump attempted to have undocumented immigrants excluded from that year’s census. (Per the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the census should count “the whole number of persons in each state.”) However, a federal court ruled against him, and the U.S. Supreme Court elected not to hear the case.
