Vlad the Impaler was ambushed by an Ottoman patrol and killed in 1476 north of present-day Bucharest, Romania. He was reportedly decapitated, and his head was sent to the sultan in Constantinople as a trophy. After his death, Vlad was lauded as a folk hero in the region for his resistance to Ottoman encroachment.
