Viet Thanh Nguyen’s family fled South Vietnam (now in Vietnam) in 1975 during the North Vietnamese invasion and the Fall of Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City). They traveled by ship to the United States and settled at a refugee camp in Pennsylvania. In 1978 he and his family moved to San Jose, California.
