In 1717 Stede Bonnet announced that he was leaving Barbados for a life of piracy, and he filed legal papers that left his affairs to his wife and friends. He bought and armed a sloop named the Revenge and recruited a crew by offering regular wages. Despite having no seafaring experience, he led more than 60 sailors and soon captured at least two vessels off the South Carolina coast.
