Mildred Stahlman formed the first neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Vanderbilt University, developing tools and systems to help infants breathe. The first infant she saved using such technology was Martha Humphreys, in 1961. The unit included advanced technology to monitor infant blood-gas concentrations and a ventilator that used both negative and positive pressure.
