Given their cold climates and geographic isolation, Iceland and Antarctica have long been free of mosquitoes. However, several mosquitoes (a male and two female of the species Culiseta annulata) were detected in the mountains of Iceland for the first time in 2025. Likely accidentally introduced by human activity, it is unclear whether they will be able to survive the winter and become an established population.
