In 1897 the cornerstone of a new courthouse in Eastland, Texas, served as a time capsule. Among the items placed inside was a live horned toad, thought by some to be capable of living for 100 years in hibernation. Thirty years later, when the courthouse was demolished, the time capsule was opened and a horned toad was found inside alive. Whether this was the same reptile or a product of lizard legerdemain is unclear, but “Old Rip,” as he came to be known, toured the nation as a celebrity and even got to meet President Calvin Coolidge.
