Working for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in the mid-19th century, Kate Warne was the first female detective in the U.S. While undercover as a Southern sympathizer, she uncovered a plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln in 1861. When Lincoln needed to travel to Washington for his inauguration, Warne escorted him through Baltimore by disguising him as her ill brother.
