Although the U.S. $5, $10, $20, and $100 bills have all had major updates since 1996, the $1 bill has remained largely the same since 1929. This is mainly because the National Automatic Merchandising Association, which represents the vending industry, regularly argues that changing their machines to accept new $1 bills would be cost prohibitive.
