Using genetic analysis, scientists theorize that humanity’s ancestors almost went extinct about 900,000 years ago. Their population is thought to have rapidly dropped by 98.7 percent, with only 1,280 individuals surviving to reproduce. It is unknown what may have caused the sudden population drop.
