Chemists Ira Remsen and Constantin Fahlberg accidentally discovered the first artificial sweetener while working with coal tar in 1879. Noticing an unusual sweet taste on his food and hands, Fahlberg taste-tested various lab equipment to find out what produced the sweetness. Saccharin is still a popular sweetener today and is still made of coal tar derivatives.
