In 1938 amateur pilot Douglas Corrigan set off from New York ostensibly to fly to Los Angeles but ended up landing in Ireland. The young man claimed to have gotten “lost in the clouds," though he’d earlier sought permission for a transatlantic flight and was denied. His story became so popular that he got to meet U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt.
